PUNKIN
Friday, August 2, 2019

PUNKIN

Michael Javalet, yes, that’s Punkin, started at an early age playing music for mom and dad and anyone else who would listen. He attended and graduated from The Musician’s Institute, MIT, in Los Angeles and toured as both a solo artist and a front man performing original music. He worked as a studio musician and had the opportunity to play with many great artists before he left LA. His move to the great Northwest years ago, for the lifestyle that everyone who lives here “already” knows about, turned out to be exactly where he needed to be.
As a song writer he embraces all styles of music, from jazz to rock, which allows his music to be influenced by those who came before him. He brings great passion to both his original music and his selection of “cover” tunes…from songs years ago that we all still hear and sing to some of the great songwriters and solo artists of today. And yes, he is still fondly called “Punkin” and has been for many years.

HARPDOG BROWN and the UPTOWN BLUES BAND

HARPDOG BROWN and the UPTOWN BLUES BAND

Get ready for Harpdog Brown & The Uptown Blues Band!
Canada’s Classic Bluesman, Harpdog Brown has a brand new album out. It’s called For Love & Money and it’s unlike anything you’ve heard from Dog! It’s a little bit Chicago and a lotta New Orleans and it’s guaranteed to move ya!

We've got the show right here!
No Cover courtesty of Rockfish Grill & Anacortes Brewing Co.!
SHOW at 8:00 PM.

"I love Harpdog’s singing and playing. He’s old-school which is a high compliment because Old-School is Real-School! Harpdog is Real Deal Smokin and Cookin Old-School style. Look out and stand back for the real deal!"
- Charlie Musselwhite, Blues Harmonica Legend and Host of Charlies Back Room on 95.9 The Krush

"Hearing Harpdog Brown singing 'Reefer Lovin’ Woman' is a joy
with the traditional old school instrumentation here. I am always drawn to the good old downhome style blues and this is certainly it!”
- Duke Robillard, Legendary Blues Musician

Harpdog Brown has grown a reputation as a real-deal purveyor of classic electric blues. Think of the old Chess Records and Sun Records of the late ’40s and early ‘50s. These days he’s been touring more and more as Harpdog Brown & the Uptown Blues Band - a vintage New Orleans Blues sound featuring slide trombone, keyboards, bass and drums and often a sax and clarinet. Still a vintage vibe, just a different vintage! This music will move you! They perform mostly originals yet they often include great songs of the masters from that era. Think Louis Jordan, Satchmo, Sonny Boy Williamson, Wynonie Harris, even Duke Ellington. Audiences are raving about this new show!

He’s been called a Blues Evangelist, and that’s a very fitting moniker. "I speak the blues like it's the truth, and it is”, he was recently quoted. "I do feel like I'm a servant of the people. A missionary if you will. Music can heal people if they pay attention to the messages in these songs.” He delivers those messages using the vintage sound whether it be with his lowdown classic blues band the Travelin’ Blues Show or with his Uptown Blues Band. Harpdog says "Blues has a healing power. It's a beautiful celebration of our perfectly flawed lives. We help people forget about their issues of the moment and then they realize that we all have our issues, and that's OK."

Vancouver-based Harpdog Brown was born in Edmonton in 1962, an adopted child who has felt somewhat detached his whole life - "a lifelong battle of not feeling like I belonged. I feel like I was born for the circus, you know, born to travel. The blues tapped me on the shoulder years ago and said 'this is where you belong, son'. So the blues became my circus and there's no better way to travel than with a band!”

Harpdog Brown is a gifted vocalist and an imaginative harmonica player. Piano man Dave Webb has been working with Harpdog over the years and they share an intuition that only comes with many hours and miles shared on and off stage. Joseph Abbott (Clarinet/Alto Sax) is the newest and youngest addition to the band. Rounding out the band is Rick Jacobson from the state of Washington on the tubs.

Harpdog has won three consecutive Maple Blues Awards for Harmonica Player of the Year (2014/2015/2016), the Fraser Valley Music Award, has three consecutive Western Canadian Music Awards Nominations, a Juno Nomination and is the only Canadian to win the coveted Muddy Award. In 2016, he was nominated for 3 Maple Blues Awards (Harmonica Player, Male Vocalist and Album of the Year) for his latest release Travelin’ With The Blues.
Travelin' With The Blues released in 2016 is still sitting in the top roots and blues charts and follows his Top 20 charting 2014 release What It Is (Roots Music Report International Blues Albums).

Get off the couch and some see some seriously vintage blues that’s lots of fun!

“This band could play anywhere in the world, in any venue, large or small, and blues fans of all stripes would love this show." - Holger Petersen, SiriusXM, CKUA and CBC broadcaster and President of Stony Plain Records

TRISH HATLEY

Vocalist Trish Hatley is one of the most beloved and enduring figures on the Northwest music scene. Known for her easy sense of swing, beautiful tone and innate sensitivity to the music, she effectively balances technical mastery with genuine accessibility, making her extremely popular among jazz fans everywhere she performs.

Hatley is also one of the hardest working musicians around. She performs and records with her own band, the Trish Hatley Quintet, as well as the vocal jazz trio Trish, Hans & Phil. Trish performs regularly at festivals, nightspots and concerts throughout the Northwest. Showtime for this performance is 6PM.

"When I think of Trish, the first word that comes to mind is dazzling. Her ability to captivate the audience while inspiring the musicians has made Trish one of our most requested soloists."
—Dr. Paul Cobb, Conductor, Everett Symphony

"This slim brunette does it all with a style and energy suffused with a self effacing wit and possesses a soulful soprano voice!"

SAGE ROMEY TRIO
Wednesday, August 21, 2019

SAGE ROMEY TRIO

From the desk of Sage Romey: "My first interactions with jazz was the records my grandfather would put on. He loved the Andrew Sisters, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Ella Fitzgerald, and any others. I loved the music and would annoy my classical piano teachers by improvising over classical pieces. In middle school I got the opportunity to join the Alaska Jazz Workshop, a group dedicated to bringing jazz education to Alaska. I continued with the AJW for the next 5 years, playing in several jazz festivals in the west coast, and an educational tour in Havana, Cuba.

The amazing opportunity of playing and learning in Cuba, gave me a great appreciation for the use, of music in a strong culture. That brought me to The Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies. In Fairhaven I studIied the many aspects that pertain to the art of jazz; from the techniques and interpersonal relationships of players, to the origins of specific rhythms, and the evolution of the ‘Americas Music’. It is a goal of mine to translate, and teach what I learn about these things with my audience both through my music, and through stories."

MARK DUFRESNE BAND
Saturday, August 31, 2019

MARK DUFRESNE BAND

Since reforming in 2016 with founding guitarist, Billy Stapleton, this current version of the Mark DuFresne Band has been wowing audiences in the Pacific Northwest. Grammy nominated Mark DuFresne is at the helm with his 3-octave tenor voice, and his championship harmonica playing. A dynamic singer and showman, DuFresne’s original rhythm and blues songs and instrumentals shine in the hands of this talented quartet.

Veteran Guitarist, and recent Washington Blues Society Hall of Fame inductee, Billy Stapleton, is kept busy with rhythm, lead and slide guitar duties. Billy's fantastic tone and artistry are second to none.

Kelly Liefer brings powerhouse skills on his Fender Bass. A Marysville, Washington native, Kelly has been playing since the age of 15 and immediately started playing in bands and clubs including the 1974 Seattle Worlds Fair. He was the original bass player for The Mark DuFresne Band, and his energetic style is sure to keep your feet tapping all night long.

On drums, the accomplished and brilliant David Hudson shows off a lifetime’s collection of grooves and chops. Inspired by the terrific trio of Sonny Freeman, Fran Christina and Fred Below, David’s swingin’ dynamic attack brings depth to the tunes and is a perfect accompaniment to DuFresne’s brand of blues/roots style.

The Mark Dufresne Band is not your typical blues fare. This spectacular “show band” plays the material like a quintessential Chicago Blues Revue. They are truly one of the best rhythm and blues outfits on the West Coast.
